Carlos Queiroz resigned as head coach of the Ghana national team after less than a month in his second tenure. The decision came following a 4-2 defeat to The Gambia in a crucial Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match. The loss marked the second consecutive defeat under Queiroz, leaving Ghana at the bottom of Group C.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed the resignation by mutual consent. Queiroz had been reappointed in September, just months after his first departure. His second stint was short-lived, ending amid mounting pressure over results and team management. The GFA stated it had agreed to terminate his contract, citing the need for a new direction.
Queiroz’s exit follows a turbulent period for Ghana football. The team’s poor performance in qualifying matches has raised concerns about coaching strategy and squad selection. Reports suggest internal tensions over training methods and player accommodations also played a role in his decision.
This is not Queiroz’s first exit from the Ghana national team. He left in July after a similar run of poor results, only to be rehired shortly afterward. His second departure in three months highlights the instability surrounding the Black Stars’ management.
The GFA has not yet announced a replacement for Queiroz. With the AFCON 2027 qualifiers looming, the team faces a critical period in its campaign. The rapid turnover in coaching leadership has sparked discussions about the long-term strategy for Ghana’s national team.
