Zeepay Ghana and its managing director, Andrew Takyi-Appiah, have filed a lawsuit against MTN Ghana and the Mobile Money Financial Limited (MMFL) for GH¢15 million in damages. The legal action alleges that a corporate mobile money wallet was registered in Takyi-Appiah’s name without his consent.
The lawsuit, currently pending in court, claims that the registration of the wallet was unauthorized and led to financial losses. Zeepay has not yet disclosed the exact nature of the damages or the timeline of the alleged misconduct. MTN Ghana has not publicly commented on the case.
This dispute follows a growing tension between mobile money providers and telecom companies in Ghana. In recent months, several similar cases have emerged, highlighting concerns over the regulation and oversight of mobile money services. The Ghana Financial Services Commission has been urged to intervene to clarify the legal framework governing such disputes.
The case underscores the complexities of digital finance in the country, where mobile money services are increasingly central to daily transactions. As more businesses enter the sector, legal and regulatory challenges are becoming more pronounced. The outcome of this case could set a precedent for future disputes in the industry.
