The UK Home Office has updated its immigration policy to allow children of Hong Kong British National (Overseas) visa holders to gain settlement without the usual five-year waiting period. This change applies to a specific category of residents under the BN(O) visa scheme.
The new policy allows eligible children to apply for indefinite leave to remain in the UK without having to wait the full five years required for most other visa holders. The Home Office stated that this adjustment aims to support families and provide greater flexibility for those with ties to the UK.
This update follows ongoing discussions about the treatment of Hong Kong residents under UK immigration law. The BN(O) visa was introduced in 1997 as part of the handover of Hong Kong from British to Chinese sovereignty. While the visa remains valid, its status has been subject to review in recent years, particularly in light of political developments in Hong Kong. The latest change reflects a continued, albeit limited, recognition of the UK’s historical ties to the territory.
